Tips for Selecting the Right Wallpaper for Your Home

Posted on

If you are redecorating your home's interior, you may have decided that you want to have wallpaper instead of paint on your walls. However, you may find yourself overwhelmed by the many choices of patterns, colors, and materials. If so, use the following tips to help you get started with finding the right wallpaper for your home.

Consider the Room's Use When Selecting the Material

When you start looking at wallpaper samples, you may be surprised at the many different types of materials from which you have to choose. Since wallpaper comes in a heavy-duty paper, vinyl, and even fabric, you may have trouble deciding which one is ideal for your home.

If so, consider the room's use before you pick out the wallpaper's material. If you want wallpaper in your bathroom or kitchen, the wall covering will be exposed to moisture, and you may have to wipe it down in case of splatters. Because of this, you want something that is resistant to water, such as vinyl wallpaper.

However, these probably will not be as much of a concern for your bedrooms or dining area. For these walls, you may decide the rich texture of fabric wallpaper would enhance the room's decorating scheme.

Choose a Pattern Size the Same as Your Room Size

After choosing a wallpaper material for each room, the next decision you will need to make is the pattern. Since there are countless patterns from which to choose, you may be tempted to pick one that you like without considering the size of the room in which you plan to use it.

However, the pattern of the wallpaper can either complement the space of the room or make it look out of place. As a rule of thumb, select a pattern size that is the same size of the room.

For example, if you have a small bathroom, a large flowery pattern will only serve to make the space appear smaller by engulfing the tiny space. A better choice would be dainty flowers in light shades.

However, small prints would look out of place in a large dining room, as they would be difficult to see. If you love big, bold patterns, this would be the room in which to use them because there is space enough to handle the large print.

Using the above tips when selecting wallpaper for each of your home's rooms can help you make choices that complement the spaces without overpowering them.
